Kobra – Fervilleon Palo # 10

The other day I saw a FB post where Fervilleon Palo was being demonstrated.  What caught my attention was the Fervilleon Kobra (Punch # 10) as it was not demonstrated the right way. GM never taught Kobra that way. The movement was telegraphed, inefficient, indirect, and was so apparent that GM would’ve never created or taught that, but rather by someone else. I could understand if the pre-2013 iteration of kobra was the one being demonstrated, but it’s not, it is an entirely different interpretation of kobra which was never taught by GM Nap.

Fervilleon was completed and finalized in 2013. I was assigned to write the book and standardize it utilizing the 2013 iteration to supersede the 2007 and 2010 iterations. Modifying what has already been standardized and calling it “progressive” (GM Nap himself does not like that term, anu yun, paano matatawag na system kung sa basic lang ay di pa kompleto) then everybody would just do as they pleased because it is still a progressive art, it will never end. A system of martial arts is a system. From Yaw-Yan, ArDigma, and into Fervilleon. Change something from what has already been finalized by the creator of the system is a change of and from the system, it will no longer be considered Fervilleon. Fervilleon is a developed system, an evolution, because it has evolved from Yaw-Yan, ArDigma, and into Fervilleon. Progressive meant still in the process of development, not finalized. Of whose and which iteration this time? Please. Don’t do that. Don’t make up things and change whatever you pleased in a system, just because you think there’s a better way of doing things. Believe it or not, GM would’ve updated me if he made any changes to his art and I would without question follow him, as always. But that fancy modification of kobra delivered from opposite side which I had no idea about is so absurd, that’s definitely not GMs. If you need to create something into an art that’s already been developed, then it is called something else. Calling it progressive may justify anybody’s own interpretation of the system, wouldn’t you think? Then there is no need to standardize something that’s still progressive. Think about it.

GM created the best systems in the whole world in my opinion. Everything links together, flows together, with continuity and fluidity. No single move differs or drastically change from another. Everything in GM’s creation is simple, direct, efficient, no telegraphing, every executions utilize economy of movements… change what GM made and you change all of those, it’s no longer simple, direct, efficient, etc. Just because it is called Kobra, it doesn’t mean it needs to coil first from opposite side of the body before it strikes, come-on, that’s ludicrous! We are not kung-fu trying to copy the movements of a snake. Kobra is a name GM chose to call a particular Fervilleon palo; not the copy of beautiful movement of a snake and then call it kobra, that’s ridiculous.

It is not my intention to cause any conflicts or dissensions with anyone. I am merely sharing and pointing out the obvious: One is of GM Nap’s, the other is an apparent modification by someone to support an opinion of how a particular move has to be, and thus chose to change it on his own. Please, respect the creator of the art and his creation. Even while GM Nap was still alive, he voiced out his frustrations that a lot of gyms do not even teach his art the way he intended it to be.
